MANILA – Cong. Arthur Defensor Jr. of Iloilo’s 3rd District seeks to help high school students choose their career paths. He filed House Bill 1117 or the “National High School Career Guidance and Counseling Act.”

“It will guide secondary students on how to proceed from high school, based on their inherent capacity and skills, job opportunity and accessible tertiary education or technical education,” said Defensor.

In filing his measure, he cited the Constitution saying that the State must ensure its youth total development for the fulfillment of their role in nation-building, by promoting relevant education.

Under Defensor’s bill, a program on career education will be implemented under the Department of Education.

The government will be mandated to build National High School Career Guidance and Counseling Program centers in all national high schools across the country.

High school students will be required to attend career coaching before they graduate.

“The total development of the youth plays a vital role in national development. It is achieved in part through a relevant educational system that starts with the career guidance of the youth at the secondary education level,” Defensor said./PN
