MARC Gasol is returning to the team that drafted him after agreeing to a two-year contract with defending champions Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday (Monday in the Philippines).

In a report by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Spanish center’s choice was narrowed down to Lakers and former team Toronto Raptors after also being pursued by the Golden State Warriors.

The 35-year-old Gasol was originally drafted by the Lakers in 2007, but had his rights traded to Memphis Grizzlies for his brother, Pau, before he ever played a National Basketball Association (NBA) game.

To make way for Gasol’s signing, the Lakers have traded JaVale McGee and a future-second round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Alfonzo McKinnie and Jordan Bell.

To make up for Gasol’s departure, Raptors signed free agent center Aron Baynes to a two-year, $14.3 million and re-signed Chris Boucher on two-year, $13.5 million deal.

Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum will remain with the Boston Celtics for the next five years while Donovan Mitchell will still don Utah Jazz’s for five more years after agreeing to separate extensions.

Tatum has agreed to a five-year, $195 million extension with the Celtics. The contract includes a player option after the fourth year of the deal in 2025.

Mitchell, on the other hand, has signed a five-year, $195 million designated rookie max extension. The deal is guaranteed for $163 million and could increase to $195 million by meeting the All-NBA criteria for the 2020-2021 season./PN
