Rebuilding communities

IT IS AN honor to be part of the Philippine Red Cross. I may not be a volunteer but I develop friendship within the organization through people whom I look up to.

It all started when my sister became an officer and volunteer way back in high school and college, respectively, of Philippine Red Cross – Iloilo Chapter. I became aware of what the organization is and what it really does in the community.

I became closer to the organization when I was invited to be one of the judges of the International Humanitarian Law debate competition for three consecutive years.

Philippine Red Cross is the premier humanitarian organization in the country. It is committed to provide quality life-saving services that protect the life and dignity especially of indigent Filipinos in vulnerable situations.

Truly, it is committed to its mission and vision: Always FIRST, Always READY, Always THERE.

One of the current missions of the organization is to give aid to Typhoon “Ulysses” victims. It gives hot meals to those affected.

Additionally, it continuously monitors and assesses the situation 24/7.

It has hundreds of volunteers and personnel trained and organized to provide assistance.

The typhoon left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) a few weeks ago. However, the organization still needs in-kind and cash donations. It still has an emergency appeal to the public for donations to address the needs in the evacuation centers and in affected areas.

Another organization also took part in this emergency appeal. Five organizations from the University of San Agustin (USA) – College of Law collaborated to collect donations in order to help our fellow Filipinos affected by recent typhoons. It was initiated by the Sigma Alpha Lex in collaboration with the USA Bar Operations, the Parliament, Portia Club, and USA Bar Review Org.

Donations have been forwarded to the Philippine Red Cross as well as to CaVolun Initiative.

This was made possible through the kindness and generosity of the Augustinian law community.

As an alumna of this university, I am proud of what they have done – going beyond what is expected and thinking about those who are struggling.

May we take part in helping rebuild communities. Bulahan!/PN
