MANILA – As safety precaution due to the coronavirus pandemic, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) announced the cancellation of its 83rd season originally slated in April 2021 following a series of discussion.
“The UAAP Board of Trustees is putting major consideration on the health and safety of the student-athletes and those involved in the operations of our competitions,” the UAAP said in a press statement last night.
It added that the decision will allow UAAP member-schools to plan their activities for the remainder of the academic year, as well as their athletic programs for next season.
The eight members of the league came up with the decision since most of them will not have face-to-face learning for the second semester, preventing the possibility of training.
The league further said that they will revisit that ruling as some student-athletes will hit the age of 27 once Season 84 plays out late next year.
“Both the Board of Trustees and the Board of Managing Directors will further discuss the implications of the cancellation for the guidance of the member-schools and student-athletes,” it said.
The decision to scrap the entire Season 83 came days after rumors surfaced that UAAP will consider holding bubbles for men’s basketball and women’s volleyball in April 2021.
Once the UAAP Season 84 starts possibly late next year, De La Salle University will still be the season’s host./PN
