MANILA – Joining the 2021 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft was not really part of Ilonggo forward Michael Jay Javelosa’s plan, but some instances and signs urged him to make a U-turn.

“Honestly, I was not really expecting (to join the draft) because of the coronavirus pandemic, and since the draft class is very deep,” the former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle told Panay News on Sunday.

“But when I found out that the requirements are lighter, it made me think twice. I asked some of my coaches in Iloilo (City United Royal) and they asked me if I am ready for it. They also told me to ask guidance from the Lord,” he added.

“Even during the day I submitted my (draft application) forms, I still have no plans to. I was just in the area. So I took that sign na since I’m there already, this might be it na,” he continued.

Javelosa, son of the Royals team owner JJ Javelosa at the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, played for Ateneo Grade School in his elementary and at Reedley International School in high school.

While in Reedley, Michael Jay was named as part of the Philippines’ 16 under and 18 under.  He also became a member of the national team which played in the Adidas Nation in Long Beach, California, United States.

In college, Michael Jay suited up for the Blue Eagles, and after his collegiate years, he played in MPBL for Navotas Uni-Pak Sardines before moving to Iloilo in 2019.

As he throws his name in the PBA draft, the 6-foot-5 Javelosa said he is willing to play for any squad. He also vowed to showcase his ballhandling skills despite playing the big man position.

“They can expect a lot of unselfishness from me since I grew up talaga as a point guard. But I’ll shoot the ball naman when needed,” he said.

The 2021 PBA Rookie Draft is slated on March 14./PN
