BORACAY – Twenty-nine vehicles here were towed and impounded by the Municipal Transportation Office (MTRO) of Malay, Aklan.

The 27 motorbikes, an all-purpose vehicle and a multi-cab had no “permit to transport” – a violation of a municipal ordinance, according to Senior Transportation Regulation Officer Cesar Oczon Jr.

Their apprehension was part of MTRO traffic enforcers’ intensified road clearing operation to weed out illegal vehicles in the island.

Last year, the MTRO impounded 69 permit-less vehicles.

The most recent seized vehicles were brought to an impounding area in mainland Malay. Their owners/drivers were fined P2,500 each.

May instances during daytime, nagakarga ang cargo boats mga motorbikes na walang permit. Nagti-ticket at nagbibigay tayo ng warning sa kanila,” Cesar said.

The MTRO resumed road clearing operations of illegally parked and abandoned vehicles in Boracay Island with a towing truck last October 2020 after months of lockdown due to the coronavirus disease pandemic.

Citation tickets are also issued for transportation-related offenses such as refusal to convey passengers, illegal parking/loading, without franchise or mayor’s permit, driving without a license/expired, misconduct/arrogance of drivers.

Cesar said the local government of Malay which has jurisdiction over Boracay has temporarily suspended processing and issuance of new permits to transport of motorcycles to the island.

The MTRO, however, will allow the renewal of motorbikes’ permits to operate for employees and workers permanently working in Boracay./PN
