BORACAY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is resuming its improvement of access and primary roads here.
For 2021, DPWHs’ Phase 3 of Boracay’s road rehabilitation has a budget of P237 million.
Work starts before this month ends.
Assistant Regional Director Jose Al Fruto said the agency is fully committed to improve the remaining 11.64-kilometer Boracay circumferential road.
Road projects funded for this year include:
* Crossing Rotunda to Cagban Port in Barangay Manocmanoc – P140 million
* 24/7 Bulabog to Ati village in Barangay Balabag – P47 million
* 24/7 passing the main road, Wetland 6 to Ati village – P50 million
The projects also include the one-kilometer Ati village boardwalk which will be an alternate road for emergency and rescue vehicles in Barangay Balabag.
“These established loops are integral in the Boracay main road to ease vehicle congestion. The projects are ready for implementation by February and March,” Fruto said.
DPWH is using conventional reinforced concrete pipes for the drainage system instead of high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic pipes for the remaining road sections.
HDPE pipes were installed along the main road in Phase 1 and 2 of Boracay’s rehabilitation.
Last year, the 8.73-kilometer main road improvement under Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Boracay circumferential road was opened to ease traffic congestion. The 4.47-km Phase I road project has three sections from Cagban Port to Hue Hotel, up to Elizalde and to Bulabog Dramatic Road.
On the other hand, the 3.36-kilometer Phase 2 project from Elizalde to Ambassador Hotel to CityMall Boracay and from Tambisaan Port to Crossing Rotunda was also completed.
Phase 1 and 2 were formally inaugurated on Dec. 4, 2020 were formally inaugurated on Dec. 4, 2020 by DPWH secretary Mark Villar.
“We appeal to engaged partners in the island for understanding and support. Malaki na ang improvements na nagawa ng DPWH at ibang government agencies to rehabilitate Boracay Island,” Fruto stressed.
The Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force has been tasked to oversee the rehabilitation of the island. The term of the task force will end on May 8, 2021, unless extended by President Rodrigo Duterte./PN
