SPORTS have been one of the casualties of the worldwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. But with the entire Western Visayas under modified general community quarantine, calls for the slow return of sports activities are going louder.
During the recent Iloilo Sports LANG podcast, Municipality of Pavia Iloilo Sangguniang Bayan member Pyt Trimañez agreed that it is high time to allow the limited resumption of sporting activities.
According to him, he will file a resolution pertaining to regulations and guidelines on the hosting of sports events, the usage of public and private gymnasiums, and other related measures.
“I know the importance of sports and I also believe that the LGUs (local government units) play a huge role on this aspect,” said Trimañez, who is into running, biking, swimming and triathlon.
“As an athlete myself, I will seek the support of my fellow SBs (Sangguniang Bayan members) on how to adopt measures here so our fellow Pavianhons can resume sporting activities,” added Trimañez.
Pavia is known to produce quality athletes, including those who are playing in Manila like John Bryan Sajonia of Far Eastern University men’s basketball team, Marianne Sotomil of University of the Philippines women’s volleyball and Glaudine Trongcoso of Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors in Philippine Superliga.

With TerraFirma Dyip dead set to make Joshua Munzon as their top-overall pick during the 2021 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft on March 14, NorthPort Batang Pier are setting its sights on Filipino-American forward Jamie Malonzo.
Erick Arejola, NorthPort’s representative to the PBA Board, said they will be taking the former De La Salle University Green Archers forward as number two overall pick due to his size, athleticism and talent that will fit the team.
“Malaki, athletic, may talent. Kung ako ang tatanungin, gusto ko yung si Malonzo. Even si Congressman (team owner) Mikee Romero, excited rin siya na makuha yan,” Arejola said.
Arejola added that Malonzo is expected to play the small forward position for Batang Pier alongside center Christian Standhardinger, Sean Anthony, and returning guard Robert Bolick.
The 6-foot-6 Malonzo played his lone season with the Green Archers in University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 82 men’s basketball in 2019 before moving to PBA Developmental League with the Marinerong Pilipino Skippers last year./PN
