KALIBO, Aklan – With some 3,000 tricycles operating here, traffic congestion has long been a problem. Infrastructure could not keep up with the growth in transportation and urbanization.
For the first time in 10 years, the local government of Kalibo has come up with a solution – traffic rerouting. There will be a dry run for two weeks in 16 barangays from Feb. 15 to 28.
Municipal Planning and Development Officer Engineer Marlo Villanueva appealed for patience and public understanding.
The traffic plan aims to prohibit the tricycles from using five national highways of Kalibo:
* Osmeña Avenue
* Cardinal Sin Avenue
* D. Maagma Street from corner Mabini Street through corner Toting Reyes Street
* Roxas Avenue from Kalibo Bridge to corner Mabini Street
* Mabini Street from corner Roxas Avenue through corner D. Maagma Street
All pedicabs and tricycles-for-hire are prohibited from utilizing national highways within the municipality, except on some portions of highways identified in their route of operation.
Routes/Zones of Operation are the following:
* Route 1 (Tinigaw, Mobo, Tigayon, Estancia, Linabuan Norte)
* Route 2 (Old Buswang, New Buswang, Bakhaw Sur, Bakhaw Norte)
* Route 3 (Pook, Mabilo, Caano, Nalook, Briones, Andagao)
* Route 4 (Poblacion)
Tricycles for hire are allowed to travel outside of their approved routes if carrying sick or injured individuals to clinics or hospitals, during emergency cases, and ferrying family members to and from schools or places of work./PN
