JORDAN, Guimaras – Active cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the island province of Guimaras climbed to 40 as of Feb. 25.
The cases were in the municipalities of Nueva Valencia (24), Jordan (eight), Buenavista (seven), and San Lorenzo (one).
Thirty-nine of these active COVID-19 cases were in the quarantine facilities of their respective towns. The one other case was being quarantined in Iloilo City.
The surged was traced to a doctor positive for COVID-19 and who had close contacts with several people in Jordan and Nueva Valencia.
Dr. Edgardo Jabasa, 81, of Barangay Magamay, Nueva Valencia and former vice governor of Guimaras died on Feb. 23 at a private hospital in Iloilo City.
In Western Visayas as of Feb. 25, Guimaras had the second lowest number of active COVID-19 cases among provinces and highly-urbanized cities. The No. 1 was Antique with only eight active cases.

As of Feb. 25, Guimaras’ cumulative COVID-19 cases (since recording started in March 2020) reached 314 with six deaths (268 cases recovered).
The deaths were recorded in Jordan (four) and Nueva Valencia (two).
The four deaths in Jordan were in Barangay Rizal (two), Barangay Maravilla(one) and Barangay San Miguel (one).
The two other deaths in Nueva Valencia were in Barangay Magamay – Dr. Jabasa and his wife./PN
