MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has relieved the chief of police of Calbayog City on Sunday following two recent controversial incidents involving his men.

PNP officer-in-charge Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar said Police Lieutenant Colonel Neil Montaño was relieved due to command responsibility. Montaño will be replaced by Police Lieutenant Colonel Rodolfo Albotra as the new chief of police, according to Eleazar.

One of the reasons for Montaño’s sacking was due to the March 8 shootout in Calbayog City, which resulted to the death of Mayor Ronaldo Aquino and five others, including three PNP personnel.

Another incident was the “irresponsible” conduct of his intelligence officer for having asked a local court of the names of lawyers representing personalities being linked to the Communist Party of the Philippines.

“These two unfortunate incidents are currently under investigation and PLt. Col. Montaño was ordered relieved for command responsibility,” Eleazar said.

Nine Calbayog City police officers, meanwhile, were also relieved and were reassigned to the Samar Provincial Police Office to undergo seminar, based on the recommendation of Police Regional Office 8 regional director Brigadier General Ronaldo De Jesus.

Police Major Ruel Burlat was designated as the new chief of intelligence unit to replace Police Lieutenant Fernando Calabria Jr., while Police Major Marino Estoño was tapped as the new company commander of the Calbayog City-based 1st Samar Provincial Mobile Forces Company.

“This reorganization is intended not only to improve the investigation and intelligence capacity of the Calabayog City Police Station in the light of the two incidents that happened but also to infuse new ideas and strategies on peace and order with the deployment of new police officers in the area,” said Eleazar./PN
