ROXAS City – Not food or basic goods  but fruit-bearing trees were the main attractions of the “CommuniTree” pantry recently organized by the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO) here.

Inspired by community pantries that made basic goods available for free to those in need, the “CommuniTree” pantry gave out free seedlings of fruit-bearing trees for planting.

Putting up this unique pantry was in line with Capiz’s marking of Earth Day (April 20-22).

Among the tree seedlings distributed for free to passersby in front of the Capiz provincial capitol were that of batwan, rambutan, lipote, cacao, chico, and calamansi.

According to CaPENRO, people were being encouraged to plant more trees in their backyards to combat climate change and achieve food security.

Capiz actually has a year-round province-wide tree growing program called “1M Kahoy Project”.

The Rotary Club of Roxas through Kamia Besa reached out to CaPENRO to extend help. They donated 50 marcotted calamansi seedlings.

“Truly, in this time of climate crisis, solidarity is what we all need to restore our Earth. Through our collective action rooted in our generosity and compassion, we can restore our Earth, our only home,” CaPENRO stressed./PN
