MANILA – The Philippines is imposing a travel ban on travelers from India or those with travel history within the last 14 days.
It will take effect today until May 14.
The travel ban was recommended by the Department of Health and the Department of Foreign Affairs following the surge of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in India.
Passengers who are already in transit from India and those who have a travel history 14 days before the arrival, who will arrive before April 29 will be exempted. However, they will undergo strict COVID quarantine and testing protocols.
“The Department of Transportation should ensure that airlines are directed not to allow the boarding of passengers entering the country pursuant to travel restrictions imposed by the Office of the President and IATF resolutions except if they are part of the repatriation efforts of the national government,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.
India is now experiencing the world’s worst COVID outbreak after a case surge in early March.
On Tuesday, it recorded more than 320,000 new cases which raised the total to 17.6 million./PN
