MANILA – Ilonggo Arnel Baconaje and Bacolodnon Roy Sumugat scored separate stoppage victories in a boxing event held over the weekend at Urdaneta Cultural Sports Complex in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.

A native of San-Rafael, Iloilo, Baconaje had a triumphant ring return after scoring a second-round technical knockout (KO) victory over fellow Filipino Jay Lloyd Quidlat.

In the opening round, the 27-year-old Baconaje set the tone early and pummeled Quidlat with vicious hits directed to the body and head until the referee halted the non-title bout midway in the second round.

Following the win, the Ilonggo boxer hopes to make a case for title matches this year. He was a former holder of World Boxing Council’s Asia Boxing Council silver featherweight belt and Pro Boxing Federation’s super bantamweight diadem.

With the victory, Baconaje increased his boxing record to 12-4-0 win-loss-draw and claimed his 10th stoppage victory, while Quidlat dropped to a 4-2-2 slate.

Bacolod’s Sumugat, on the other hand, hardly broke a sweat following his first-round stoppage victory over Eljohn Evangelista.

Sumugat was aggressive since the opening bell and wobbled Evangelista with his combination hits that led the referee to end the match since the latter could not respond to the former’s attacks.

Sumugat improved his boxing record to 11-11-1, while Evangelista’s record slumped to 4-4-0.

The boxing card was presented by Cucuy Elorde of UKC Pro Boxing Edition and Robert Hill of the VSP Boxing with Edmond Dellosa serving as the event’s matchmaker./PN
