Iloilo City imposes liquor ban

ILOILO City – The sale and public consumption of liquor in this southern city are prohibited until May 31, 2021.

“The implementation of proactive measures, such as but not limited to border restrictions and total prohibition on the sale and public consumption of liquor, are essential to slow down the surge in COVID-19 cases, stop further spread of variants, buy time for the health system to cope, and to protect more lives,” read Mayor Jerry Treñas’ Executive Order (EO) No. 046 issued yesterday.

The EO specifically stipulated that “effective 6 p.m. of May 26, the sale and public consumption of any form of liquor or alcoholic beverages or any alcoholic drink containing a specific percentage of alcohol by volume or weight which may be in the form of whisky, brandy, gin, rum, cordinal, liquor, cocktail, wine, champagne, vermouth, basi, tuba, saki, beer, ale, stout and the like shall be absolutely prohibited until 5:59 p.m. of May 31, 2021 unless otherwise extended or lifted earlier.”

PENALTIES

Establishments, convenience stores, sari-sari stores, and other similar businesses that violate the prohibition, whether directly or indirectly, will be penalized appropriately under the Iloilo City Tax Code.

Moreover, all persons who knowingly break health protocols, and endanger the lives of the residents shall face administrative and/or criminal charges./PN
