COVID-19 infections in Aklan crosses 4K mark

KALIBO, Aklan – Cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Aklan crossed the 4,000 mark on June 26 with 59 new cases.

The tally of cases rose to 4,035.

Aklan is reporting roughly 79 cases a day on average (June 20 to 26), 20 percent higher than last week’s daily recorded cases.

Sixty-nine people with COVID-19 are currently in hospitals, data from the Provincial Health Office showed, while 830 others are under facility quarantine or home isolation.

Also, nine died due to COVID-19 from June 23 to 26, taking the overall death toll to 95.

Meanwhile, 3,041 cases have recovered.

The province’s COVID-9 recovery rate stands at 75 percent.

Gov. Florencio Miraflores ordered tougher restrictions. Restaurants can offer outdoor dining only with limits customers, while personal care businesses like hair salons and barbershops have been temporarily closed.

Stay-at-home is mandated for adults above 65 years old and youngsters below 18 years old.

Miraflores also urged people to continue wearing facemasks, be in well-ventilated spaces, observe physical distancing, and proper washing of hands.

On March 27, 2020, Aklan confirmed its first COVID-19 case – a resident of Libacao, Aklan who returned from a trip in Manila. The man, in his 80s, fully recovered from the deadly disease.

The first COVID-related death in Aklan was announced on Aug. 7, 2020. The woman in her late 40s from Numancia was hospitalized in Iloilo City prior to her death.

By mid-March this year, cases surpassed the 1,000 mark, forcing local authorities to impose granular or surgical lockdowns.

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.

These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. /PN
