Anini-y folks alerted on possible dengue surge

ANINI-Y, Antique – The Rural Health Unit (RHU) here urged residents to take precautionary measures against dengue, a mosquito-borne disease.

“Sa kadya nga panahon hindi lang (coronavirus disease 2019) ang atun ginaproblema kundi pati dun ang kaso ka dengue,” said Fermark Silva, Nurse II of the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 assigned at the RHU.

Dengue is caused by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes that live and breed in clean, stagnant water.

He stressed the 4S strategy against dengue:

* “search and destroy” the breeding places of mosquitoes

* “self-protection” from mosquito bites (wear pajamas, long-sleeved clothes; use mosquito nets or repellants)

* “seek early consultation” when signs and symptoms of dengue occur

* “say yes to fogging” as a last resort when there is a looming outbreak

“Kami nagapangayo kang kooperasyon…Manglimpyo kang atun kasiringan ilabi na gid ang mga posible nga lugar nga ginabalayan kang lamok,” said Silva.

Data from the Department of Health in Region 6 showed Antique with 122 dengue between Jan. 1 and June 19 this year.

Individuals should suspect dengue when a high fever (40 degrees centigrade) is accompanied by two of the following symptoms: severe headache, pain behind the eyes, nausea / vomiting, swollen glands, muscle and joint pains, and rashes.

For severe dengue, the warning signs to look out for are: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, bleeding gums, blood in vomit, fatigue, and restlessness./PN
