ILOILO – Eight-years-old chess player from Pavia of this province will be one of the country’s flag bearers in the ASEAN Age Group online chess tournament on Aug. 1, 2021.
This after Shan Lester Jamerlan, a Grade 2 student of Pal-agon Amparo Elementary School, emerged as champion in the Under 8 Division of the 2021 Philippine National Age Group Hybrid Chess Grand Finals played via Zoom and Tornelo platform from June 26 to 29.
Jamerlan ousted young contenders from around the country to clinch the Candidate National Master title.
Throughout the 11-round competition, Jamerlan recorded a 10-1 win-loss slate. In the final round, he mauled his fellow Ilonggo player to earn the championship.
“Si Shan nag-start hampang chess at the age of four, indi pa na sya ka kilala sang mga characters but with constant practice, nakitaan sya sang potential kag ginpa-join sya sa mga tournaments asta nga nag-champion sa national event,” according to his mother, Ma. Sheila.
She added that the main ingredient for Shan to attain the victory was the support of his family./PN
