Fajardo, Pingol banner nat’l women’s team in FIBA Asia Cup

MANILA – Bacolodnon Ella Patrice Fajardo and Ilongga Karl Ann Pingol are excited to represent the Gilas Pilipinas Women in the 2021 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Asia Cup in Amman, Jordan, from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3.

Fajardo, a 5-foot-5 guard from Fairleigh Dickinson University, said she is hoping to play for the country whenever her schedule permits.

“My heart is where my home is, my country, the Philippines,” Fajardo added. “Like what I said before, I do plan to represent my country as much as I can.”

After representing the country in international competitions with the national 3×3 basketball squad, this will be Fajardo’s first time with the 5-on-5 national women’s basketball team.

Meanwhile, Pingol of Pototan, Iloilo, was taken aback by her inclusion to the national women’s basketball team. She vowed to use the opportunity to prove her worth.

“I am excited and at the same time nervous kasi hindi ko po talaga inasahan na mapapasama ako sa lineup ni Gilas Pilipinas Women,” Pingol told Panay News on Wednesday.

Ayaw ko naman sayangin ang tiwala ni coach Pat (Aquino) kaya talagang pinaghahandaan ko ito by working out, palaging practice and stay healthy,” added the National University Lady Bulldog standout.

Pingol has represented the Philippines three times in the ASEAN School Games, which were gold medal finishes.

Aside from Fajardo and Pingol, other members of the Gilas Pilipinas Women were Camille Clarin, Kristine Cayabyab, Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, Chack Cabinbin, Andrea Tongco, Khate Castillo, Ria Nabalan, and Mar Prado./PN
