MANILA – National Master (NM) Cesar Mariano leaned on his veteran tactics to win the P2,000 top prize in the Open Category of the 84th Iloilo City Charter Day Online Chess Tournament on Aug. 25.
Finishing behind the woodpusher – a mainstay of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines GM Wesley So Cup winner, Iloilo Kisela Knights – were Horizon Villanueva, who bagged the runner-up cash prize of P1,500, and Kisela Knights teammate NM John Michael Silvederio, who got P1,000 for his third-place finish.
Kisela Knights Grand Master (GM) Rogelio Antonio Jr. was the category winner, but he was excluded from the cash prize since he was a guest player in the one-day virtual chess competition.
“We are thankful to GM Joey for lending his time in our Charter Day event. His presence has given the participants an added motivation to perform well,” said Hubert Canto, the event’s organizer with Fritz Bryan Porras and Rein Dayot.
Meanwhile, Vaughn Robert Oberio won the 14-under chess category, with Iana Angela Sotaridona and Archie Jamotillo coming in second and third. Oberio received P1,500 for winning the category, while Sotaridona and Jamotillo got P1,000 and P700, respectively.
Special awards and P500 each were also handed to Kisela Knights’ Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (Best Female Player), Armany Harkey Salvador (Top 12-under), Faith Argenal (Top 10-under), and Shan Lester Jamerlan (Top 8-under).
Batang Hamog dominated the League of Legends: Wild Rift championship at the E-sports Festival, with Cyber Apex Spectre and Ako Bahala finishing second and third, respectively. At the Valorant event, Team No Practice defeated first runner-up Anonymous Ilonggos and second runner-up Solstice to earn the crown.
Ex United ruled the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang category, defeating first runner-up Pers-Ilo Adamant and second runner-up House Slytherin./PN
