ILOILO City – Western Visayas has produced 659,378 metric tons (MT) of palay during the first quarter of 2021, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The region’s major palay producer is Iloilo Province contributing 53.84 percent to the entire production.
This was followed by Capiz (18.14 percent), Negros Occidental (11.76 percent), Antique (9.89 percent), and Aklan (4.22 percent).
Meanwhile, Guimaras has recorded a 2.14 percent contribution to the regional total palay produce.
PSA-Guimaras reported that palay production of Guimaras declined by 2.30 percent from 14,455 MT in the first quarter of 2020 to 14,122 MT in the first quarter of this year.
Of the 14,122 MT total palay harvest, 10,049 metric tons or 71.16 percent came from rainfed farms, while irrigated farms produced 4,073 metric tons, contributing 28.84 percent to the quarter’s total palay crop yield.
“The decrement in production during the quarter is due to the decrease in area harvested on both irrigated and rainfed farms,” PSA-Guimaras Provincial Statistics officer Nelida Losare said.(PIA)
