Defensor designated as prov’l committee chairman of NUP

ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. was appointed as committee chairman of the National United Party (NUP) here.

NUP President Elpidio Barzaga Jr. said a confirmation letter was sent to Defensor on Oct. 5.

Defensor is authorized to administer the oath of membership to those who wish to join NUP.

He will also be able to recruit members at the local level.

“Oaths of membership and member data forms duly filled out by new members who have taken oath should be submitted to the NUP Headquarters/Secretariat,” the letter read.

Nomination of candidates for local posts in the province in the May 9, 2022 elections shall also be approved by the provincial committee chairman or in his absence, any of the designated party officials.

“It is expected that the nominees are of good moral standing and good reputation, have strong chances of winning the posts they vie for, recognized in their respective areas as possessing probity and proper requisites and qualification for the office, as well as strong loyalty to the Constitution and By-Laws of the Party,” the letter added.

Defensor is also requested “to submit political situation reports to assist the national officers in the assessment of the party’s political strategy.”

On Oct. 1, Defensor announced his departure from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan or PDP-Laban for NUP.

Defensor said we wanted to align the direction of the province with Iloilo City’s, especially since both support the Uswag Party, a regional party that aspires to gain a foothold in Congress.

Iloilo City’s Mayor Jerry Treñas and Lone District Cong. Juliene Baronda are also NUP members./PN
