
MANILA – Jeaneth Hipolito kicked off Team Philippines’ campaign in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships on a bright note in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The 14-year-old Hipolito delivered a bronze medal in the women’s 40-kilogram division. She placed third in the snatch event on Tuesday with her 51 kilogram lift.
Hipolito, however, was unable to capture another medal for the country in the clean and jerk event. She finished with 62 kilograms, good for a fifth spot.
Overall, the fast rising Zamboangueña weightlifter ended the competition with 114 kilograms total, short of another medal in the said tournament.
Turkish Ezgi Kilic swept all the gold medals in the category with 55 kilograms lift in the snatch and 70 kilograms lift in the clean and jerk for a total of 125 kilograms.
Mexican Colli Canto, meanwhile, captured the silver medal in the clean and jerk with her 67 kilogram lift and bronze in the overall category. She ended with 118 kilograms.
Velez Estrada of Colombia, on the other hand, captured the silver medals in the snatch with 53 kilograms and in the overall of the event with 118 kilograms lift.
Five more Philippine weightlifters are competing: Adrian Cristobal (men’s 61kg B), Albert Ian Delos Santos (men’s 61kg B), Rosejean Ramos (women’s 45kg A), Christian Rodriguez (men’s 67kg B), and Lovely Inan (women’s 49kg A)./PN
