ILOILO City – This southern city was hailed as the Top Gold Awardee for the Most Bike-Friendly City in the Philippines during this year’s Mobility Awards yesterday.
This city bested 29 other cities in the country, with Naga City and Mandaue City as silver awardees.
“My dream to make Iloilo City a livable and bike-friendly city is becoming a reality,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas.
The city government will receive a Gold Bicycle-Friendly Recognition Sign, a certification designating the city’s ranking, and gift certificates from bicycle-friendly establishments worth P10,000.
“With our desire for a sustainable city, we provided an alternative mode of transport that aims to lessen carbon footprints as our response to the rising impact of climate change,” Treñas said.
He further shared that to keep bikers and commuters safe, the city developed an 11-kilometer bike lane that stretches from Diversion Road in Mandurriao district towards select areas in the metro which includes the four-kilometer protected bike lane along Diversion Road marked with lines and plant boxes.
Treñas added that the city plans to interconnect all the bike lanes all over the urban center for easier transport and mobility, expanding into a total of 32 kilometers.
The city mayor believed that bike lanes contribute more spaces on the roads and an improved traffic flow.
“We look forward to having more open spaces for the Ilonggos,” said Treñas.
He thanked the Mobility Awards 2021 for the recognition.
“Iloilo City is dubbed as the Bike Capital of the Philippines, and we are very proud to extend this recognition to our beloved people who also made a huge impact in achieving a more sustainable metropolis. Daku naman nga pagkilala ang aton nabaton sa likod sang tanan naton nga pinangabudlayan,” he added./PN
