Know Your Values (It’s Important! And Here’s Why)

One Monday morning, when all the employees of Company XYZ had arrived, a major announcement was circulated.  The message was for everyone to proceed to the seminar hall to pay tribute to this person who was hindering their progress in the company.  The tribute was to begin at exactly 11 o’clock.

At first, everyone was saddened at the news that one of their colleagues had passed just when things were getting back to normal after the lockdowns.  But then everyone was curious… who was this person?  And why was he (or she) hindering their progress in the company?

People then filed into the seminar hall and one by one began to form a line before the coffin.

But curiosity turned to shock!

Because when they peered into the coffin, they saw themselves.

Shock turned to disbelief, then turned to humor.  Gimmick or no gimmick, the message that everyone left with was clear.  A slip of paper was handed out to everyone. And on it was written:  The only person blocking you from progress in the company is yourself.  You are the person creating  a revolution in your life. Your values make you who you are.  Your values influence your happiness and your success.   You are the only person who can help yourself.  Your life doesn’t change when the boss changes, when your work changes, or even when your friends change.Your life changes when YOU change.  So now, break those limits.  The most important weapon you have to smash those challenges is your VALUE SYSTEM.

Life coaches and companies are big on “core values”.  But what are values really?

Values are the lenses through which you see yourself and the world.  They form your personal truth and mantra – from which self-esteem, priorities, sense of fulfillment, and strength develop.

Values are not the same as goals.  Goals have a finish line.  Values do not.  They may evolve and change but it is never “completed”.

Knowing your values is having a compass.  Your values guide you in the direction you want to take in life. Say, freedom is a priority value, you would make a different decision than if financial security was number one.   Or if you place a premium on adventure, you will follow a different path compared to someone who values routine.  You form these values as a result of family, culture, society, education, and experiences.

When you aren’t in alignment with what you value, you feel off.  Everything becomes a huge effort.  The extreme is, your body even reacts to the dissonance.  Say, you get this job that pays well, but since there aren’t close and meaningful connections in the office, you can become stressed out unnecessarily.
