2 Aklan towns want to dump trash to Malay

MALAY, Aklan – Acting Mayor Frolibar Bautista asked the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) to authorize him to enter into an agreement with the adjacent local government units of Nabas and Buruanga for the disposal of their garbage to Malay’s sanitary landfill.

The sanitary landfill is located in Barangay Kabulihan. It is being jointly managed by ECOS Sanitary Landfill and Waste Management Corp. and the local government of Malay.

Nabas mayor James Solanoy and Buruanga mayor Concepcion Labindao expressed intention to use the sanitary landfill, the only such facility operational in the province of Aklan.

Bautista said Malay can impose fees to Nabas and Buruanga per ton of garbage dumped into the engineered sanitary landfill.

“Depende sa desisyon ng SB Malay na payagan ang mga munisipyo na walang sariling sanitary landfill. Ipapatawag din nila ang mga nasabing local government units upang pag-usapan ang waste disposal at kung ilang kubiko ang kanilang itatatapon,” Bautista said.

Currently, ECOS is hauling some 40 tons of municipal solid waste from Boracay Island to mainland Malay. It has a 15-year garbage contract with the local government.

The accumulated waste from Boracay is disposed of in the Kabulihan landfill to comply with the zero-waste mandate of the national government.

Malay has a pending special land use permit application for 17 more hectares expansion of the sanitary landfill in Barangay Kabulihan with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau./PN
