MANILA – Ilonggo Juanito Paredes got back on the winning track with his second round stoppage victory of Negrense Roy Sumugat on Saturday at the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City.
This was a bounce back victory for the Dumangas, Iloillo native after dropping his last two matches, including a unanimous decision defeat to fellow Filipino fighter Pete Apolinar in March in Mandaue City.
Both Paredes and Sumugat landed huge blows in the opening round but the llonggo found a gap in the defense of the Negrense in the second frame to land a counter right hand that dropped the latter to the canvas.
With the victory, the 29-year-old Paredes increased his boxing record to 9-7-1 while also tallying his fourth stoppage win. On the other hand, Sumugat saw his four-bout winning streak halted to drop to 12-12-1 record.
Ilonggo Jules Victoriano (10-4-0, 7 KOs), for his part, snapped his three-bout losing skid with a stunning fourth round stoppage victory over the experienced foe Jetro Pabustan (30-9-6, 9 KOs).
The Iloilo City native Victoriano made his presence felt early. He scored a knockdown in the opening round before finishing off Pabustan in the fourth stanza with some great right hands.
Aklanon Delmar Pello (9-1-0, 3 KOs), meanwhile, saw his erstwhile unbeaten slate tainted following his unanimous decision defeat over former amateur standout Charly Suarez (9-0-0).
The Nabas, Aklan native Pello was outfoxed and outhustled by the much-experienced Suarez in the entire match en route for the latter to run away with a lopsided decision victory.
Capiznon Jimmy Borbon (7-10-4, 4 KOs), for his part, suffered his fifth consecutive loss following a close split decision defeat in the hands of Negros Oriental’s Leonardo Doronio (18-18-3, 11 KOs).
Doronio was the dominant fighter from the start with his volume combinations but Borbon also had his moments as he connected series of blows but was not enough to escape with a win./PN
