Boracay joins new basketball league

MANILA – A Boracay-based team will be among the founding members of the Pilipinas Super League (PSL), a basketball tournament to be launched on February 2022.

PSL announced Boracay’s participation through its Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon but no further details were made available as to the composition of the squad.

This will be the first time that a basketball team from Boracay is competing in a national basketball tournament such as the PSL.

Previously, Western Visayas were just being represented by Iloilo City, Bacolod City or Negros Occidental in big leagues, including in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

Panay News learned from a source on Wednesday that another Western Visayas-based squad is inquiring about the possibly of joining the inaugural PSL conference.

Among the teams that already confirmed their participation was former MPBL Lakan Cup champion Davao Occidental Dumper Tigers-Cocolife.

The Tigers will be carrying over the core of their champion squad to the PSL led by Negrense forward Robby Celiz and Ilonggo guard Billy Ray Robles.

Other members of the Davao Occidental team were Jerwin Gaco, John Wilson, Paolo Hubalde, Keith Agovida, Alwin Alday, Marco Balagtas, Emman Calo, Bonbon Custodio, Gab Dagangon, Chris Lalata, Irven Palencia, Allan Santos, and Joseph Terso.

Also competing in the tournament were Basilan-BRT Peace Riders, Cagayan Valley Golden Eagles, Pagadian Explorers, Tsada Cagayan, Davao and Lapu-Lapu.

Running the Pilipinas Super League are Rocky Chan and Chelito Caro, who were former CEO and COO of the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup, respectively./PN
