KALIBO, Aklan – The province of Aklan is facing more uncertainty at the onset of the latest Covid surge.
Health authorities are bracing the surge of locally transmitted cases from holiday weekends, although many cases are vaccinated.
A high two-week growth rate of 400 percent from December 21, 2021 to January 3, 2022 would possibly escalate the province of Aklan to Alert Level 3. The average daily attack rate per 100,000 population is at 0.35 percent from the previous 0.07 percent.
The troubling data from December 31, 2021 to January 6, 2022 also tallied 28 new Covid-19 infections out of 224 tests conducted by the molecular laboratory. The positivity rate of 12.5 percent of the recent week is way above the World Health Organization’s 5 percent benchmark.
With the spike in cases, the Provincial Health Office- Aklan sent samples to the Philippine Genome Center through the Department of Health-Western Visayas for genome sequencing to determine the presence of variants.
Right now, the dominant Covid-19 variant in Aklan is Delta variant with 28 cases.
The case numbers of Covid-19 go up in the capital town of Kalibo with 74 active cases, followed by Malay with 44, Numancia (16), Batan (13) and Ibajay with 12 cases as of January 10, 2022.
Eleven persons from Nabas, Numancia, New Washington, Malay and Kalibo found to be infected with Covid-19 have been admitted to the hospitals for further treatment, according to Aklan Provincial Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit.
Meanwhile, Aklan governor Florencio Miraflores has reminded the public to take more precautions – wearing face mask, avoiding large crowds and washing hands more often – and to get Covid-19 shots and the booster. /PN
