KALIBO, Aklan – Kalibo Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc has reminded the candidates in Aklan to put off falsehoods, speak the truth and work towards peaceful and orderly May elections.

Ahead of elections, the religious leader made the statements as the Commission on Elections, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting held a unity walk and covenant signing for local candidates on February 4, 2022.

Tala-oc lamented political candidates who buy votes, are deceitful and who have not shown concern for the poor.

“Usuyon natun ru matuud ag matarong. Ru pagpinuril ag pagsamad it iba hay atong tapnaon ag punduhon. Kapati gihapon ako na ru eleksyon hay bukon it magastos, kung gagastos siguro hay kun anu ru gintaeana it laye sa pagkampanya,” he said, addressing the candidates and supporters.

Tala-oc also harped that candidates should ‘put away falsehoods and speak the truth because that is the way of God’.

He also urged the candidates to “never bribe a voter with money’ or influence the voters by giving them money during the election in the province of Aklan.

“Kita eamang hay magalibot, magkampanya ag magpresentar sa atong kaugalingon and freely without intimidation or influence nga botohan kita it mga tawo,” he stressed.

Tala-oc also rallied all candidates for the unity of actions by supporting plans for man’s common home to protect the environment.

The church official has re-echoed the pastoral statement of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines to challenge the candidates to take part in promoting the use of renewable energy.

“There is an urgency in enhancing ambitions and actions concerning climate mitigation, adaptation, and finance including phasing down coal and deeply cutting both carbon and non-carbon emissions by 2030,” he added./PN
