Several towns in Capiz suspend classes, works

CAPIZ – Local chief executives of several towns in Antique province have ordered the suspension of classes at all levels and work both in private and public offices on Monday due to bad weather brought by typhoon Agaton.

The typhoon has brought continuous rains in the whole Western Visayas including Capiz causing floods and closing some roads making it impossible for commuters to traverse.

Among these towns were Panay, Pontevedra, Sigma, Dao and Dumarao.

According to Dao Mayor Ernesto P. Escutin, in his memorandum order issued, the suspension of classes will allow the residents sufficient time to prepare for the said situation.

Meantime, according to Dumarao Mayor Edgardo Arancillo, the suspension shall not apply to all emergency, health, and other offices and establishments whose services are deemed essential to peace and order, disaster management, and response, health and medical, search and rescue, and among others.

In suspending the classes and works, the local chief executives cited Section 5 of Article II of the Philippine Constitution which provides for the protection of the property and the promotion of general welfare, and Section 16 of RA No. 7160 or the Local Government Code which mandates that all local government units must promote the health and safety of all residents, among others./PN
