DUMAGUETE City – Bacolod Tay Tung High School girls volleyball team cruised to a lopsided win over Davao City National High School at the start of the National Invitational Volleyball Competition on Wednesday at the Foundation University Gym here.
The Thunderbolts quickly imposed its dominance behind veterans Katherine Shaine Cortez, Ana Hermosura and Gwen Bañas to score one-sided triumphs in the two sets.
“We are happy to start the tournament with a win. But we also know that we are still to face the tougher opponents, including those from the National Capital Region,” according to coach Roberto Calamba Jr.
NCR’s Nazareth School of National University Lady Bulldogs also started their campaign with a 25-10, 25-14 annihilation of Kings Montessori School Lady Vikings.
Bacolod City’s Living Stones International School also opened their campaign in the boys volleyball with a 25-16, 25-15 straight-set domination over Davao City High School.
Living Stones opened the first set with 5-0 before widening it to double digits at 22-12 behind their flurry of jump serve service aces and combination plays.
Davao City found their rhythm in the second set for a 3-1 uperhand but errors from them coupled by Living Stones’ back line attacks and steady defense clinched the win for them.
“We have to focus on building our stamina. These boys also played in Aklan prior to our travel here,” Living Stones head coach Ralph Savellano said in an interview with Dumaguete Sports Today.
Bacolod Tay Tung High School’s boys basketball team, meanwhile, faltered in their last two matches in the National Invitational Sports Competition boys basketball at the Marikina Sports Center.
The Thunderbolts suffered back-to-back defeats on Tuesday against Sacret Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles (91-73) and Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets (74-69).
The Magis Eagles earned the right to represent the country in the ASG after sweeping all their matches. The Blue Eagles and Thunderbolts ended the qualifiers as runner ups./PN
