GUIMARAS – The weeklong “eat-all-you-can” event of last week’s Manggahan Festival here used up a total of eight tons of mangoes, according to Alvin Nava, assistant provincial agriculturist.

The eight tons were roughly equivalent to 8,000 kilograms of mangoes, he added.

Guimaras exports its sweet mangoes, paving it to be known all over the world and thus earning the nickname “Mango Capital of the Philippines” from local and foreign tourists.

Guimaras mangoes are reportedly served at the White House and Buckingham Palace.

The “eat-all-you-can” event was held on May 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, and 22.

“Siguro ang mga tawo nga nagkaon sini more or less 4,000 kay kada person two kilos ang masarangan nga makaon nga paho,” Nava told Panay News.

The provincial government actually prepared 10 tons of mangoes (equivalent to 10,000 kilograms) for the “eat-all-you-can” event – the highlight every Manggahan Festival.

According to Nava, the participants in the event came from Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Roxas City and even as far as Cebu and Metro Manila.

“Very successful gid. Considering nga nag-pandemic and nag-stop kita (holding Manggahan Festival) for two years (2020 and 2021), makasiling kita nga bisan paano very successful,” said Nava.

For P100, a guest was given the chance to consume unlimited number or kilos of mango in 30 minutes in the eating venue – the provincial capitol grounds.

In previous years, they had a guest from Mindanao who consumed around 11 to 12 kilos in 30 minutes. For local guests in Western Visayas, the highest was six to seven kilos./PN
