ILOILO City — Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW) consumers will be able to enjoy longer water service hours with the construction of new wells that will supply more water to MPIW’s service areas.

In collaboration with its sister company, Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation (MIB) operated its new well in Barangay Sta. Monica last Wednesday, May 25. MIB constructed a new well to increase its capacity to 2,100 cubic meters from 230 cubic meters to help improve MPIW’s water supply to more than 45,000 customers.

The recently energized well is only one out of the four wells that is currently under construction to further augment the supply that MPIW needs to address its customers’ increasing water demand.

“We remain committed in improving the service we provide to our customers and one of our immediate actions is to address the water supply situation linked to a low reserve supply by working closely with our bulk water suppliers in improving their water sources,” said MPIW Chief Operating Officer Robert Cabiles.

The rapid increase in the water demand over the years in MPIW’s service areas, which includes Iloilo City and the municipalities of Cabatuan, Leganes, Maasin, Oton, San Miguel, Sta. Barbara and Pavia can be attributed to factors like population growth, economic and business opportunities, and in-migration.

MPIW loses over 43,000 cubic meters of water per day due to aged, dilapidated, and leaky pipes, water pilferage and illegal connections, which is why MPIW prioritizes its water loss reduction and pipe expansion programs to mitigate the lack of supply in its service areas.

Cabiles added “While we can increase the water supply to 5,600 cubic meters once all wells are completed, the water supply situation remains volatile and continue to change day to day due to many factors. We are keeping our commitment of working towards 24/7 supply at 7 psi pressure, or reaching only up to the ground floor, for all customers”

MPIW is working aggressively in increasing their efficiencies, technical solutions and investing in water infrastructures to ensure that still-limited water supply is distributed as equitably as possible to all its customers.

To date, MPIW has replaced almost 20,000 linear meters of old pipes since the company commenced in 2019. It is equivalent to 4.4 percent of the approximately 433,129 linear meters water distribution network that the company inherited from Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD).

MPIW is the joint venture company of Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) and Metro Pacific Water (MPW) that aims to improve water and sanitation services for the Ilonggo community.
