DUMALAG, Capiz – Ilongga Althea Rose Martirez came up with a gold and silver medal in the Dunlop Age Group Tennis Cup 2022 Dumalag, Capiz leg over the weekend.
Martirez was hailed as the Most Valuable Player in the women’s division after capturing a gold medal in the 18-and-under singles and a runner up finish in the 21-and-under.
Martirez, a standout from Central Philippine University, bagged the 18-and-under gold by defeating Tennielle Madis of M’lang, North Cotabato in the finals, 6-1, 5-2 (retired).
Martirez, however, failed to make it a double gold after falling short in the 21-and-under category following a 2-6, 6-4, 5-10 defeat to Stife Marithe Aludo of Trento, Agusan del Sur.
Iloilo City’s Alexandra Onte, meanwhile, captured the gold medal in the 14-and-under girls singles after a 6-1, 6-3 sweep of Princess Anne Menil of Kibawe, Bukidnon in the finals.
Louraine Jallorina, on the other hand, emerged as champion in the 12-and-under girls singles after a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of fellow Iloilo City-native Diana Frances Alcarde.
Francisco de Juan of Barota Viejo, Iloilo bagged the championship in the 10-and-under unisex singles event after a 4-1, 4-1 beating of Robertson Olavides of Iloilo City.
Iloilo City’s John Benedict Santiago, meanwhile, settled for a runner-up finish in the 18-and-under boys singles following a 6-3, 2-0 (retired) loss to Romeo Largo of Maragusan, Davao de Oro.
John Rafael Santiago of Iloilo City, on the other hand, ended up with a runner-up finish in the 12-and-under boys after a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Krelz Jan Gecosala of Midsayap, North Cotabato.
Other gold medal winners were James Vynald Ryle Aquino of Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte (14-under boys), Kian John Sanchez of Cagayan de Oro City (16-under boys), Stife Marithe Aludo of Trento, Agusan del Sur (16-under girls) and Jonelle Christian Llavore of Cagayan de Oro (21-under boys)./PN
