BACOLOD City – Teachers in Negros Occidental hope for a salary increase with Vice President-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio also concurrently serving as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) .
According to Ian Arnold Arnaez, information officer of DepEd in Negros Occidental, a salary hike has long been the demand of teachers but this has never been realized.
Others in the teachers’ wish list are additional school facilities such as classrooms, and the repair of dilapidated ones.
President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has named Duterte-Carpio his Education secretary.
Among others, Duterte-Carpio said she would push for the return of in-person classes by August of this year.
She also promised to look into increasing the salary of teachers.
Marcos on Monday said he wanted Duterte-Carpio to look after the welfare of country’s teachers.
Marcos made this remark after Duterte-Carpio revealed that the incoming President instructed her to review the implementation of the country’s K to 12 program.
He said he did not want to preempt the plans of the incoming vice president, but reminded her not to forget the plight of teachers.
“I keep reminding her to look after the teachers. The teachers need to be guided, need to be given training so they would improve in their job,” Marcos said in a press conference in Mandaluyong City.
Aside from ensuring that teachers receive fair salaries and benefits, he wanted them to be provided skills training as well as teaching supplies and equipment. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
