BACOLOD City – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Occidental confirmed there is a high voters’ registration turnout for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in December.
Provincial elections supervisor Atty. Ian Lee Ananoria said the high turnout is an indication that people are interested in participating in the upcoming polls.
For the past two weeks, 67,843 regular and SK qualified voters, both in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City, have registered.
Ananoria said the high turnout of registrants is not only in Bacolod City, but also in other Comelec offices in the province based on reports of their respective Elections Officers.
Transfer of voters are included in the ongoing voters’ registration and Comelec passed a new resolution that only requires Barangay Identification / Certification and any other government issued IDs for applicants for registration.
However, Ananoria issued a warning against “flying voters”; registrants will be scrutinized and violators will be charged with falsification of documents.
Penalty for such an offense is jail time of one to six years.
At present there are no planned extension for the voter’s registration which will end on July 23./PN
