Treñas sorry for improper ‘don’t give a damn” remark

ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas publicly apologized for saying he didn’t “give a damn” about the sentiments of those criticizing the euthanizing of stray dogs in the city.

“My statement was uncalled for and totally improper for a public official,” said Treñas in a statement issued Friday.

City government veterinarian Dr. Tomas Forteza recently admitted some stray dogs were rounded up in Barangay Navais, Mandurriao district and these were euthanized.

“I apologize for my statement when I was asked about my reaction to the sentiments of the community on the alleged euthanasia of several puppies and dogs,” said Treñas.

According to Forteza, there was an emergency request from the Barangay Navais Council about stray dogs in their area. Residents were worried; those dogs could be rabid.

Deeming the situation an emergency, the City Veterinary Office deemed it urgent to take action.

Treñas clarified that it is not the policy of the city government to kill dogs.

“Dr. Forteza already admitted nga gin obra nila (dog euthanasia). But we have to find out whether it was legal under circumstances,” said Treñas.

He ordered the City Legal Office to conduct a review./PN
