Bacolod public cemeteries overcrowded

BACOLOD City – Upon the recommendation of the City Health Office and the General Services Office, the city government here ordered the closure of the Burgos Public Cemetery.

The cemetery is already overcrowded.

“Closure” meant that no more burial should take place at the Burgos Public Cemetery, also known as the North Public Cemetery.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod(SP) urged Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez to look for another  area to establish a new public cemetery in the northern part of this city.

This city has three public cemeteries – in Burgos, in Barangay Granada and Barangay Handumanan.

According to Councilor Thaddeus Sayson, even Barangay Granada does not allow any more burial of non-residents of the barangay in the public cemetery there because it is also full already.

The barangay has in fact purchased a lot adjacent to the cemetery to accommodate only its dead residents.

The cemetery in Barangay Handumanan is also becoming full, so there is a need to establish a new one, Sayon explained./PN
