It is said that every skill you acquire doubles your odds of success.  But what skills must we focus on to get us started on the right foot?

Headhunters predict that these top skills will be in demand in the face of advancing technology:

1. Digital Marketing – Brands now depend on online marketing to reign in customers. Thus, all things digital (social media marketing, influencer promotion, and online marketing) are in demand. The World Economic Forum 2018 Jobs Report revealed that at least 50% of employees need to upskill to meet the demands of the 4th industrial revolution.  They’ve made it specific – the critical skills include digital literacy and critical thinking.   

2. Coding – Writing programs that every technology hardware utilizes.  Computers are now dominating the future.  Learn to communicate with computers and you already got your edge.  

3. Creative thinking  – Post pandemic, many industries have undergone drastic change.  Thus, your mindset must adapt too. Modern problem solving requires innovative and critical reasoning. For instance, a Swedish car manufacturing company instituted an exceptional way of drawing out suggestions from engineers – teaching them origami. Who would’ve thought that the Japanese art of folding paper, would help them come up with award-winning ideas?  It may seem absurd from the get-go, but creativity can affect cognitive abilities in unique ways.

4. Decision-making and adaptability – Apparently, the more information you have, the more difficult it is to make decisions. Automation can only contribute to speed and presentation.  But the wisdom of these numerical data must still be sifted through with ethics and critical thinking.  Once options are narrowed down, the decision maker must be able to adapt and act decisively.  

5. Cultural skills – Geographical barriers continue to lower thanks to the internet. Who would’ve thought that the world would be dancing to BTS or that someone from a different continent would be Googling a recipe from Latin America?  Allow the world to be your playground.  Explore cultures and ways of thinking around the globe.  This will widen your exposure and arm you with the necessary skills for a great career.

Your shield against a fast-changing environment is your skills.  Technology will perpetually fill the world with products but it is entirely up to you to re-skill and up-skill to meet demands.
