With few enrollees, 74 private schools shut down

ILOILO City – Due to low enrollment and financial constraints, 74 private schools in Region 6 have decided not to operate for school year 2022-2023.

Fifty-eight of these private schools are temporarily closing while 16 decided to fold up for good, according to Hernani Escullar Jr., information officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6.

“Waay nila na-reach ang enrollment nila nga maka-meet sang ila operational needs and make them financially viable,” said Escullar without giving figures.

These private schools are in the following areas:

* Aklan – six

* Antique – nine

* Bacolod City – six

* Bago City – one

* Cadiz City – one

* Capiz – seven

* Guimaras – nine

* Iloilo – 10

* Iloilo City – one

* Kabankalan City – one

* Negros Occidental – seven

* Passi City – three

* San Carlos City – four

* Silay City – nine

Escullar said many parents opted to enroll their children in public schools.

DepEd central office’s data showed Region 6 with 2,233,946 learners for school year 2022-2023. This is 106.17 percent higher than the number of learners it recorded for the region in the previous school year.

Region 6 has 5,068 schools, 4,045 of which are public, 1,010 private and 13 are state universities and colleges and local universities and colleges./PN
