Paranadas carry UE to DLSU upset in UAAP

MANILA – University of the East Red Warriors turned things around in the fourth period to score an 81-72 stunner over De La Salle University Green Archers in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Nikko Paranada heated up early to keep the Red Warriors afloat against the Green Archers before his brother Kyle Paranada came up with clutch baskets in the endgame to complete the upset win.

Kyle finished with 20 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals, while Nikko had 18 markers. The Red Warriors recorded their second victory in four matches this season.

The Green Archers were comfortably ahead at 67-59 in the early part of the fourth quarter when Kyle unloaded eight straight points to carry the Red Warriors to 67-all count with 4:17 left.

The Green Archers momentarily snatched the lead back but the Red Warriors answered back with conversions from Nikko, Luis Villegas and Kyle for an 81-72 advantage with 34.9 seconds to go.

Villegas also chimed in double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Filipino-American Isagani Stevens contributed eight points, eight rebounds, and four steals for the Red Warriors.

Deschon Winston tallied 26 points, nine rebounds, and four steals, Kevin Quiambao had 15 points while Penny Estacio produced seven points, seven assists, and five rebounds for the 2-2 Green Archers, which played sans Evan Nelle and Negrense Mark Nonoy.

Meanwhile, Adamson University Falcons created separation from Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the second half to score a 76-65 victory and tied the Red Warriors and Green Archers at 2-2.

Holding to a slim 31-27 halftime edge, the Falcons went on a massive third quarter run where they outscored the Tamaraws by 10 to establish a 14-point lead heading into the fourth, 55-41, and never looked back.

Vince Magbuhos exploded for career-high 23 points, including seven treys, Jerom Lastimosa added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Cedrick Manzano got eight points, four rebounds, and four assists for the Falcons.
