‘Paeng’ storm surge batters houses in Molo

ILOILO City – Tropical Storm “Paeng” brought heavy rains, strong winds and huge waves which battered an estimated 50 houses along the coast of Barangay Boulevard, Molo district on Saturday night, Oct. 29.

Luminida Mendoza, one of the residents, said it was around 12 midnight when their house was destroyed.

Mga alas-10 naghalin na ‘ko di, didto ko sa utod ko nagtulog sa (Barangay) San Juan kay dalagko na ang tubi pero igo nagkalakakas ang amon dingding mga alas-12 gid kag asta gid mag-aga nga dalagko ang balod,” Mendoza said.

Punong barangay Virgilio Villanueva instructed residents to move to higher grounds but some refused to leave their houses.

“Sa subong, may ginabanta mga 50 ka panimalay ang nagkalaguba, 25 diri ang na-verify nga totally damaged, pero sige pa ang inisipay. Kalabanan diri gid sa Zone 3, Zone 5, kag Zone 6,” Villanueva said.

More than 60 families are currently in the evacuation center of the barangay while some stayed with relatives.

No casualties were recorded.

The City Department of Social Welfare and Development Office’s assessment in the area is ongoing./PN
