ILOILO City – A revision in the curriculum for the mechanical engineering course was proposed by the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) – national chapter.

According to Engr. Rex Casiple, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region 6’s Chief Education Program Specialist, they are now in the process of revising the curriculum and they are waiting for the go signal.

Casiple is a mechanical engineer and a member of the PSME – Panay chapter.

According to PSMEs, many subjects are no longer needed for the course, adding that they expect to present the proposed revisions in the curriculum by next year.

Meanwhile, Casiple noted that the mechanical engineering course in Western Visayas started to attract more enrollees since its number of years was reduced to four from five.

There are also two more schools in the region offering engineering courses – University of Iloilo in Iloilo City and Guimaras State College in Guimaras province.

As to the privileges and scholarships offered by CHED, he noted that 15 percent of the scholars are taking engineering program courses.

Currently, when it comes to the status of engineering enrolment in the region, it is now third among the courses with the highest enrollees next to business and education courses.
