WITH the aim to showcase their public speaking skills and further enhance their confidence, 43 students of West Visayas State University (WVSU) – Integrated Laboratory School (ILS) spearheaded the WVSU COE-ILS TED TALK 2022 titled “EUNOIA TALKS: Conversations among Beautiful Minds” on Dec. 9, 2022 at the SM City Iloilo North Point Activity Center.
“Curriculum will not be meaningful if we don’t give life to it. This activity is a manifestation of an authentic assessment of the students’ ability to use and speak the English language,” said Dr. Nestor Paul M. Pingil, Education Supervisor II of the Department of Education Region 6 and the keynote speaker and chief judge of the event.
These words of Pingil inspired the students and challenged the faculty to intensify the efforts of providing the students with learning opportunities that can holistically develop them.
Prof. Esperval Cezhar H. Cadiao, a three-time national champion himself, is the brain behind this event, being the facilitator of the course Oral Communication in Context for Grade 11 Senior High School (SHS).
“I came up with this idea because as a product and advocate of public speaking, I want to impart to my learners the fulfillment of being able to overcome fear and articulate ideas thoroughly and without hesitation,” Cadiao said.
With the support of the College of Education (COE) headed by its dean, Dr. Ricky M. Magno, the English Language Teaching Division with its chairperson, Prof. Marievic M. Violeta, and ILS director, Dr. Danilo M. Parreño, this pioneering event was a success.
Together with Pingil as judges were Cadiao and Viennie Marie J. Carmona.
The Top 3 best speakers were the following:
* Althea Jemima Escanlar – champion; speech title: “What Lies Behind the Scenes”
* Jacqui Patricia Antes – first runner-up; speech title: “I Never Took the Risk Until I Was Given the Chance”
* Charles Matthew Buenavides – second runner-up; speech title “Padayon: Move Forward”
Aside from the student-speakers, Daniella Sicad, Psyche Una Villaresto, Psyche Mamaril,
Kynne Castigador, Czkha Glye Garrucha, and Mahali Mae Umiten entertained the crowd
with their song and dance numbers.
ILS parents, students and faculty filled the venue of the event co-organized by SM City Iloilo and English Majors’ Organization of WVSU-COE./PN
