ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is calling for a meeting with various stakeholders mainly to discuss possible solutions to the traffic congestion in the vicinity of the Ungka flyover in Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo.

The city mayor said the meeting will be held tomorrow and among those invited were Pavia mayor Luigi Gorriceta, Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), Philippine National Police, Land Transportation Office Region 6, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Region 6, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6, and various transport groups here.

Given the current situation of the said flyover, there is a need to find ways and means to manage and lessen the traffic congestion there, said Treñas.

“We can no longer wait for solutions from DPWH,” Treñas said.

He noted that Gorriceta already confirmed his attendance to join the meeting.

Ungka flyover was closed to traffic since Sept. 18, 2022 due to vertical displacement issue.  This has spawned a traffic bottleneck in the area.

Earlier, DPWH and the project contractor, International Builders Corporation (IBC), vowed to address the issues hounding the infrastructure project during a meeting in Manila with Public Works secretary Manuel Bonoan.

Also present at the meeting were DPWH Western Visayas officials and the department’s Bureau of Design (BOD). They promised to fast-track the verification for the engineering interventions to address the problems besetting the flyover.

No less than Bonoan pledged to hasten the recommendation for the engineering intervention by sending a technical working group from DPWH-BOD to Iloilo.

Moreover, the parties agreed to wait for the results of the audit being conducted by a team  from the DPWH central office to perform a comprehensive assessment of the flyover.

All these years, the safety of the riding and driving public has always been its priority, stressed the IBC./PN
