ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. welcomed the resolution filed by the Makabayan bloc urging the House of Representatives to conduct a legislative inquiry I nto the defective construction of the P680-million Ungka flyover and the delaye d construction of the P560-million Aganan flyover.
“Yes, I support any inquiry by Congress. If they want to tackle that, why not,” said Defensor.
Kabataan party-list’s Rep. Raoul Danniel A. Manuel, Gabriela Women’s Rep. Arlene D. Brosas and Act Teachers’ Rep. France L. Castro filed House Resolution No. 721 on Jan. 26.
Defensor said he is constantly in touch with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan.
The latest update he got was that the geotechnical investigation by the third-party consulting firm hired by DPWH’s central office was ongoing.
“We are waiting the result,” said Defensor.
In the meantime, Bonoan told Defensor that the road widening along the stretch of the Ungka flyover would continue.
To relieve traffic congestion, each side will have two lanes instead of one. Its completion is expected in mid-February.
The flyover was closed on Sept. 18, 2022 – two weeks after fully opening it to traffic – after a vertical displacement on piers 4, 5, and 6 was detected.
Panay News reached out to DPWH Region 6 through Assistant Regional Director Jose Al Fruto, who said they could not comment as they are yet to receive a copy of the resolution./PN
