Widened Ungka road to open next week

ILOILO – Motorists and the riding public have to wait for one more week before they could use the widened road along the Ungka flyover in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district and Barangay Ungka II, Pavia town.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 assistant director Jose Al Fruto said they will stick to their deadline, which is mid-February.

“We are supposedly targeting ining week galing alang-alang gid. Siguro next week gid namon ma-complete kay we are working out on one lot owner dira sa right side going to airport. That’s around 12 meters na lang, the rest kuha na namon,” Fruto said in an interview with Panay News.

He explained that workers of the project contractor, International Builders Corporation (IBC), were working almost 24 hours each day to comply with DPWH secretary Manuel Bonoan’s promise to the Ilonggos.

Bonoan earlier said the widened road will be open and passable by Feb. 14 to lessen traffic congestion in the area, especially during rush hours.

A road closure is being implemented on one side of the road along the Ungka flyover from 9 p.m. onwards to continue the road widening works.

Fruto added that working in the evenings is better since there are no obstructions or motorists passing by their working area.

Nagapangayo kita sang pasensya sa mga pumoluyo nga naga-ilistar sa kilid kay magahud kami asta kaagahon, but we are improving, and I think we are getting into compliance sa commitment namon, pero ang ano gid naton makahagan-hagan sang huol sa traffic,” he said.

Once the road widening is completed, DPWH-6 will improve lighting in the area. Some of the street lights were temporarily removed for the road widening.

They will also install the necessary traffic signs in coordination with the local government units of Pavia and Iloilo City./PN
