Ungka traffic flow improves after Monday’s chaos

ILOILO City – The traffic flow in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district to Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo improved on Tuesday after Monday’s chaos.

Jeck Conlu, head of the city government’s Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO), said the public can now expect a “normal” traffic situation in the area.

On Monday morning the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) closed a road being widened resulting to traffic congestion. Desperate commuters got down from stranded vehicles, took down the barriers blocking the flyover’s approaches and walked straight through it like they would on an overpass.

Kon ano ang normal naton nga dalagan sang trapiko, amo na ma-experience everyday kay wala man kita may gintandog da or may daku nga ginlain nga scheme sa area,” said Conlu.

He also noted that the vehicles from the city going to Pavia do not need to U-turn up to Green Meadows Subdivision. As currently implemented by the Pavia traffic management,  vehicles going to the town have two options. Those in the inner lane can go straight through while those in the right lane can go carousel going to Barangay Tacas, Jaro.

However, Conlu said during rush hours in the morning, a volume of traffic can be expected coming from Pavia entering the city while in the afternoon, volume of traffic can be expected coming from the city to Pavia.

The city government continues to assist the Pavia traffic management. Conlu said they are deploying 20 traffic personnel daily or 10 traffic aides per shift.

Ang dalan naglapad-lapad na gawa. Hopefully ma-fully widen na siya para mas ma-improve pa gid ang aton traffic flow sa area,” Conlu added.

Meantime, Mayor Jerry Treñas, who chairs the infrastructure committee of the Regional Development Council 6, will call for a meeting on Feb. 13 to discuss the status of the Ungka flyover./PN
