AKLAN – The proposed conversion of Malay town into a component city got the nod of the 19th Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan.

Malay is a first-class municipality. It exercises jurisdiction over the world-famous Boracay Island.

“The provincial government of Aklan, through the SP Aklan, fully supports the aspiration of the people of Malay for its conversion into a component city to be known as the City of Malay,” read part of Resolution No. 2023-069 dated Feb. 6, endorsing the measure introduced by 2nd District Rep. Teodorico Haresco, Jr. in the 19th Congress.

Haresco’s House Bill No. 6401, calling for the cityhood of Malay, is pending with the House Committee on Local Government.

In his explanatory note, Haresco cited the readiness of Malay, Aklan for cityhood to sustain development and provide basic socioeconomic services – food security, education, disaster risk reduction, housing, health care, peace and order, and basic infrastructure development – for its people.

“The conversion of Malay, Aklan into a component city (of Aklan) will enhance its potential and capability to attract additional local and international investments, further propelling its economic growth and development and upgrading social service delivery for its people,” Haresco added./PN
